Old North, the oldest surviving building on the Georgetown campus, is shown here as a line-cut after a drawing by Simpson, printed in J. Gilman Shea's 1891 memorial of the college's first century. Georgetown was founded in 1789 as the first Catholic college in the United States, and Old North, raised in the 1790s, became one of its earliest landmarks above the Potomac. Line-cut engravings like this were a common way to illustrate books of the period, when photographs were difficult to reproduce on the printing press.
