Georgetown College, shown here as an engraving, appeared in the college's academic catalog for 1860-61, according to its caption card, though that attribution has not been independently verified. Founded by the Jesuits in 1789, the college is the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the United States. In 1860 it stood on a hill above the Potomac in Georgetown, then a separate port town that would not join Washington until 1871. The print shows the campus as the school presented itself on the eve of the Civil War.
