Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is the subject here, shown as it stood in the 1830s when the campus was still small and largely built around a central green. The lithograph was drawn by Ami B. Young and printed by Stodart & Currier of New York, and it was published by B.O. Tyler around 1834 or 1835. Founded in 1769, Dartmouth was one of the oldest colleges in New England, and views like this one served as souvenirs and records of institutions that were gaining national reputations. Prints of college buildings from this decade show how architecture and open space were presented to a public that was still forming its picture of American higher education.
