A motorized fire engine, the kind that began replacing horse-drawn apparatus in American fire departments in the 1900s and 1910s, is the focus of this c1911 photographic print. Motor fire engines were faster to reach a blaze and could carry hose, ladders and pumping equipment without the teams of horses that had long been required, and their arrival marked a major shift in urban fire protection. Photographs like this one, held in the Library of Congress, document that transition as cities modernized their equipment.
