Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1881 was one of the most important industrial cities in the state, built along the Schuylkill River in Berks County. Its economy rested on iron and steel works, rolling mills, locomotive and railroad car shops, textile mills, and the hosiery and silk trade, with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad running through the heart of town and tying its factories to coal fields and to markets in Philadelphia and New York. The city's population had grown rapidly over the preceding decades, drawing German-speaking families, Welsh and Irish workers, and laborers who filled the mills and shops. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown a community proud of its foundries, its brick rowhouses, and the hilly streets rising above the river, a city that many residents knew as a center of heavy manufacturing in eastern Pennsylvania.
