Ridgway, Pennsylvania, in Elk County, sat along the Clarion River in 1895, a town built on the cut timber and hemlock bark of the surrounding hills. Lumbering and tanning were the main sources of work, and the tanneries drew on the hemlock forests that had covered the region before the mills stripped them. Rail service connected the town to the wider state, carrying lumber and leather out and bringing supplies and new residents in. Residents of the 1890s knew Ridgway as a county seat and an industrial town, with its courthouse, churches, and commercial streets forming the center of county life. The forests were already thinning, and the town's fortunes were tied to how long the timber and bark would last.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
