Union City, a borough in Erie County in northwestern Pennsylvania, was a small railroad and farm town in 1895, set among the forests and oil-producing country that shaped much of the region's economy in that decade. Lumber cutting and the tanning trade, which relied on hemlock bark, drew workers and capital into the wider area, and rail lines carried timber, bark, and farm goods to larger markets. Residents of a town this size would have measured their lives by church, school, and the depot, where the arrival of trains marked the rhythm of the day. Much of the borough's growth rested on these connections to the outside world, and its streets and buildings reflected a community still expanding in the years before the twentieth century.
