St. Marys, Pennsylvania, in 1895 was a small industrial town in the hills of Elk County, where a population of German-American Catholic families had settled in the nineteenth century. Its economy rested on the surrounding forests, which had been logged heavily for decades, and on the carbon works that turned local resources into electrical carbon products for the growing electrical trade. Residents would have measured the town by its churches, its schools, and the mills and shops strung along its streets, all of which the map records street by street. Like many lumber-era communities in northwestern Pennsylvania, St. Marys was adjusting to a landscape that the timber companies had already stripped, and its future depended on the industries that could keep working after the trees were gone.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of St. Marys, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1895. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
