Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1898 was a Schuylkill River city of brick streets and hillside neighborhoods, still growing from a market town into a large manufacturing center. That spring the nation went to war with Spain, and young men from Berks County joined Pennsylvania volunteer units that drilled and mustered through the summer. At home the population was climbing toward the 1900 census, and new houses, churches, and schools spread up the slopes below Mount Penn. Residents knew the city for its mills and shops and the workers' rows that grew up beside them, and this view captures a place between its older craft economy and the larger factories still to come.
