Newmanstown and Sheridan were small communities in the Lebanon Valley of eastern Pennsylvania in 1898, a farming and village landscape where most families made their living from the land, local trades, and nearby quarries and rail lines. The valley's farms grew grain, hay, and produce for markets in Lebanon, Reading, and Philadelphia, and the Reading Railroad network tied these villages to those cities. Many residents were of Pennsylvania German descent, and churches, schools, and fraternal lodges anchored community life. In 1898 the nation was at war with Spain, and young men from across central Pennsylvania were enlisting and drilling, so news of the conflict would have been part of everyday conversation in towns like these.
