Mohnsville, a village in Berks County, Pennsylvania, sat in 1898 among farms in the countryside west of Reading, the county's largest city. Its residents worked mostly in agriculture, raising grain, dairy cattle and livestock on land settled largely by German-speaking families. Reading's rail and industrial economy, anchored by the Reading Railroad and its iron, textile and hosiery works, drew many of the surrounding farm people into town for work and trade. Village life centered on the church, the school, the general store and the fire company, and most people knew Mohnsville as a place where they married, worked and buried their kin.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mohnsville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1898. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
