Bernville, a small borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, looked much as it had for decades in 1898, when this bird's-eye view was drawn. Its economy rested on farming and the trades that served the surrounding countryside, and many residents were of Pennsylvania German descent, speaking the dialect at home and worshiping in church congregations that had stood for generations. The county seat at Reading, about a dozen miles away, was the region's larger industrial center, with iron works, textile mills, and rail lines of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad carrying goods and commuters. In 1898 the nation's attention was on the Spanish-American War, and small towns like Bernville sent word of local volunteers and held gatherings to mark the news.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bernville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1898. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
