Norristown, the seat of Montgomery County, sat on the Schuylkill River about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia in 1881. Its economy rested on manufacturing along the river and its creeks, and the rail lines that followed the Schuylkill valley carried coal, iron, and finished goods between the anthracite region and the city. As the county seat, the borough was also the center of courthouse business, law offices, and local government, so lawyers, county officials, and merchants shaped its daily life. Residents in 1881 knew it as a busy river town with a courthouse square, churches, and shops along its main streets, and a town that was steadily growing as the surrounding farmland gave way to houses and factories.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Norristown, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
