Children crowd around a model railroad while adults look on in this watercolor, charcoal, ink, and graphite drawing made as a cover for *The New Yorker* of December 28, 1940. Perry Barlow, who signed the work "P. Barlow," combined several media to build the scene's texture and detail. The magazine's covers of this period often leaned on warm, observational humor about everyday life, and this one ties that approach to the holiday toy trade. Perry Barlow gave the drawing to the Library of Congress in 1961, and it was later shown in Hannover, Germany, in 2000.
