Balloon sellers were a familiar sight at state fairs in the early twentieth century, and this picture shows one at the Minnesota State Fair in Saint Paul. The date is given with a question mark, so the exact year is uncertain. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington, D.C., photographer known for her documentary work and portraits, made the image. Fairs like this one offered families cheap, colorful amusements, and street vendors with bunches of balloons were part of that appeal.
