Titled *The Educational Balloon*, this 1888 print is a plate from *Patent Office Curiosities*, a book of unusual inventions and oddities drawn from the records of the United States Patent Office. Ballooning was still a novelty for the public in the late 1880s, and it drew the imagination of inventors and writers who saw aerial travel as a way to widen people's view of the world. Prints like this one show how readers of the period pictured new technology mixing with ideas about teaching and improvement.
