Labeled U.S. War Balloon No. 2 and dated to about June 14, 1907, this print shows an early military balloon from the years when the American army was first building its own lighter-than-air craft. The Army Signal Corps then handled military aeronautics, using balloons for observation and signaling over difficult terrain, and this photograph documents one of those machines. The print was copyrighted by Waldon Fawcett, but the date and other details come from an old caption card that has not been independently verified, so the exact circumstances are worth treating with some caution.
