This ink drawing shows the street face of the New National theater, set on E Street directly across from Pennsylvania Avenue NW in downtown Washington, D.C. Its corner location placed it among the city's most visible civic and entertainment blocks, close to the Federal buildings and the avenue that connected the Capitol to the White House. An elevation like this is a planning document: it fixes the proportions, bays, and ornament of the facade before construction, so it shows the architect's intentions for how the building would present itself to passersby. Dated 1932, it dates from the early years of the Great Depression, when new theater construction slowed sharply across the country.
