The Loew's Columbia theater stood at the corner of F and 12th Streets NW in Washington, D.C., and this 1930 ink drawing shows its front elevation, the facade as the designers planned it. Loew's was one of the largest movie-theater chains of the period, and its houses were built to make a night at the pictures feel like an occasion, with grand street fronts meant to draw crowds from the sidewalk. Elevation drawings like this one served as the working record for builders and show how a theater's public face was composed before construction began. The drawing belongs to the Library of Congress's collection of architectural and engineering drawings, which preserves such plans as records of how Washington's commercial streetscape took shape.
