The Shubert Garrick theater, also called the Casino, stood at the corner of F and 7th Streets NW in Washington, D.C., and this ink drawing shows its front elevation as it was documented in 1922. The Shubert organization was among the largest theatrical producers in the United States in the early twentieth century, running houses in New York and other cities, so a Washington theater under its name reflects the period's expansion of commercial live entertainment. Elevation drawings like this one were used to plan and record a building's exterior, so the sheet is useful for studying how a 1920s downtown playhouse presented itself to the street.
