Few houses were as closely tied to a single circle as Kelmscott Manor, the Elizabethan farmhouse in the Upper Thames valley that William Morris leased from 1871 as a country retreat. This view turns to the attics, the low, sloping spaces under the roof. The platinum process used for the print was prized by photographers for its soft tones and fine detail. The date of about 1897 is an estimate from a shelflist card and has not been verified. The house's old timber and vernacular character drew Morris and his circle, and the attic setting reflects that interest in older building traditions.
