Brazilian poet Antônio Gonçalves Dias appears in this engraving as the frontispiece to the 1877 edition of his *Poesias*. Born in Maranhão in 1823, Dias became one of the leading voices of Brazilian Romanticism, known for Indianist poems drawing on indigenous themes and for "Canção do Exílio," a lyric of longing for home that generations of Brazilians have memorized. The record credits the engraving to an artist named Darodes, though those origin details come from an older caption card and remain unverified. Dias died in a shipwreck off the coast of Maranhão in 1864, at age 41.
