Herbert Hoover is shown reaching for a button that will set machinery running in a newly built facility, a ceremonial gesture of the kind presidents performed at openings and dedications. The caption, taken from the National Photo Company's negative sleeve, dates the moment to December 6, 1929, when Hoover was in the first year of his presidency and the country was weeks away from the stock market crash that would dominate the decade. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events, left behind this glass plate, and the thin streaks and blemishes visible on it are signs of the coating's natural wear over time.
