Few recruiting posters from the First World War carry their appeal in two languages, but this one prints its call in both English and Polish, with a blank space for a local recruiting center to be added. W. T. Benda, a Polish illustrator, made it in 1917, when a Polish army was forming in France under Allied sponsorship. Its American audience was largely Polish immigrants and their descendants, whom recruiters hoped to persuade to fight for an independent Poland.
