A color lithograph poster from 1918 carries a message that is direct in its wording: "Stand by the country's girlhood," with the Y.W.C.A. offering to act on behalf of young women. The artist, W. T. Benda, was a known illustrator of the period, and the poster reflects the wartime effort to channel American women into service work. During the First World War the Young Women's Christian Association ran hostess houses, canteens and recreation programs for women and girls near training camps and industrial centers, and posters like this one were used to raise money and public support for that work. The printed credit to Stage Women's War Relief, of New York City, shows how theatrical and civic groups joined the appeal.
