Jefferson's grave at Monticello is set apart by its simple obelisk, which he designed himself before his death in 1826 and which specifies the inscription he wanted: author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia. He chose not to list his presidency, a detail that has drawn comment ever since. The iron fence surrounding the plot and the wreath laid at its base reflect the long custom of visitors and admirers honoring the third president on the hilltop estate near Charlottesville.
