Few visitors expect a Virginia university to be honored on a Paris avenue, but this bronze plaque on the Champs-Élysées marks the spot where Thomas Jefferson lived while serving as American minister to France from 1785 to 1789. It was set up after World War I, timed to the centenary of the University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded in 1819. The plaque links two parts of his career, his diplomatic years in Paris and his later work in education, and it reflects the lasting ties between the United States and France that his time there helped build.
