Set on the south bank of the Tidal Basin in Washington, the Jefferson Memorial honors the third president and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Architect John Russell Pope designed its domed rotunda in the classical style, and the building was dedicated on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. A bronze statue of Jefferson stands under the dome, and the cherry trees along the water, a gift from Japan in 1912, became a signature part of the view that early picture postcards like this one showed to visitors. The walls carry passages from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson's own writings.
