Doris Day's title role sets this poster apart: it advertises *Calamity Jane*, the 1953 Warner Bros. musical Western, which loosely drew on Martha Jane Cannary, the frontier scout and Deadwood, South Dakota legend who lived from 1852 to 1903. Directed by David Butler, the film paired Day with Howard Keel and was made in Technicolor. Its song "Secret Love" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The record's subject terms, which include cowgirls and a whipping, point to the rough, action-driven side of the frontier myth the film drew on.
