Few of the Cincinnati views from this period show a building dedicated to a fraternal order, which makes this color lithograph of the Masonic Temple unusual. The print was designed by the architectural firm Hamilton & McLaughlin and produced by the Cincinnati lithographers Middleton, Strobridge & Co. Its chromolithographic process used a separate stone for each color, a costly method that made such city views popular with businesses and private buyers in the late 1850s. The notation that the print was entered in the clerk's office of the federal district court reflects the copyright registration that publishers sought for images like this one.
