State Street, looking north from Madison Street, is the subject here, with the Masonic Temple rising in the distance at the end of the avenue. The street was Chicago's main commercial thoroughfare, lined with department stores and office buildings, and the Masonic Temple, completed in 1892, was among the tallest structures in the city at the time. This view comes from a stereograph, a card printed as a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be seen through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Its maker, H.C. White, was a stereo publisher, and the date of about 1905 comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
