Its title, *Emprunt de la Défense*, refers to a French national war loan, a public subscription the government ran to help pay for the fighting. By 1915 the war was costing far more than peacetime budgets could cover, so the state asked ordinary citizens to lend it money, and posters and printed appeals were a main way of making that case. Campaigns like this presented lending as a patriotic duty, with imagery that tied the defense of the nation to every household's contribution. The record does not name the artist, so the picture is best read as evidence of how wartime finance was sold to the public.
