Marsh drew this crowd of unemployed men as an illustration for the September 1932 issue of *Fortune*, the business magazine Henry Luce had launched in 1930, and the print reproduces that drawing in color. Marsh was known for dense, restless street scenes of New York, and here he turns that eye on the Depression, packing the figures tightly together so that the viewer feels the weight of numbers rather than any single face. The image is a useful record of how the national unemployment crisis was pictured for middle-class readers of the period.
