This pencil sketch shows a drove of cattle moving with the Union army near Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in early February 1864. The initials "EF" in the record point to Edwin Forbes, a Union artist who followed the Army of the Potomac and made quick field studies of camp, march and supply. Beef on the hoof was a key part of the army's rations, and herds like this one had to keep pace with the marching columns, so the drawing records a side of the war that battle scenes rarely show.
