A map like this one shows how France laid claim to a vast interior of North America that it knew mostly from river routes and fur-trading posts rather than from survey. Much of the territory it marks was drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries, and the claim rested on explorers such as La Salle, who traced the river to its mouth in 1682 and named the region Louisiana after King Louis XIV. Maps like this one were often drawn in Europe to support diplomatic and commercial arguments, so their boundaries reflect ambition as much as geography. Worth noticing is how loosely the western limits are drawn, a sign of how little of that land Europeans had actually seen.
