De Soto's horsemanship is on display before Atahualpa, the Inca ruler, in this engraving of the Spanish conquest of Peru. It was published in Lambert A. Wilmer's 1858 biography of De Soto, printed in Philadelphia, and appears on page 196 of that book. Horses were unknown in the Andes before the Spanish arrived, so mounted riders made a strong impression on the people they met. Francisco Pizarro's forces seized Atahualpa at Cajamarca in 1532, and the Inca was executed the following year.
