A group of five seated and standing figures, posed close together in a studio setting, makes this daguerreotype unusual for its date, since portraits of several people were still hard to make in 1840. Exposures then ran from several minutes to much longer, so sitters had to hold still while the silvered copper plate captured the image. The daguerreotype process, announced in France in 1839, produced a single mirror-like image that was usually housed under glass in a small case or frame, as this one is. Pictures like this give a rare view of the earliest photographic studios, when posing and lighting were still being worked out by trial and error.
