Eliza Ballou Garfield, mother of President James A. Garfield, sits for this card, made by J.F. Ryder, a Cleveland studio photographer. Cabinet cards like this one were the standard keepsake portrait from the 1870s into the 1890s, often exchanged among relatives and friends. Eliza Garfield had raised her children on a modest farm near Hiram, Ohio, after her husband died when James was a toddler, and her son's rise to the presidency in 1881 drew public attention to her family. The card is worth noticing for pairing a rural matriarch with a city studio, a meeting of domestic and public life.
