The Chittenden Memorial Bridge carries its name as a tribute to Hiram M. Chittenden, the Army Corps of Engineers officer whose work did much to shape Yellowstone's roads and bridges in the early twentieth century. Like many park structures of that era, it was designed to blend into the landscape rather than dominate it, using materials and forms meant to suit a wilderness setting. Its place among the park's bridges makes it a useful reminder that the roads visitors drive today were built by engineers working in remote country with limited equipment. Look closely at the stonework and railings, which reflect the rustic design philosophy that guided much of the park's early construction.
