The Chittenden Memorial Bridge is named for Hiram Martin Chittenden, an Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw much of the road and bridge building in Yellowstone National Park in the early 1900s. Like many structures in the park, it was built to carry visitors over rough terrain on routes that had been cut only recently. This view looks north-northeast, so the bridge's approach and setting give a sense of how the park's roads were laid out around its streams and canyons. Its memorial name reflects the lasting influence Chittenden had on how travelers reached the park's major sights.
