The remains of Corkscrew Bridge, shown here looking east, are a reminder of how Yellowstone's early road network was built. Its name points to a winding, spiral form that suited the rugged terrain it crossed. After the U.S. Army took over administration of the park in 1886, soldiers and crews built and maintained roads and bridges like this one with hand labor and local materials. The bridge's surviving pieces, rather than a standing structure, show how quickly exposed timber and stone work in the park's harsh climate and heavy seasonal use gave way.
