The Nob Hill ruins shown here are those of the mansion built by railroad magnate Leland Stanford, who died in 1893, and the nearby Hopkins Art Institute, the art school housed in a former mansion on the same hill. Both buildings stood among the grand homes of the city's wealthiest families until the April 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed gutted much of San Francisco. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and landmarks, sold scenes like this one to a broad public eager to see how far the destruction reached. The bare masonry walls and collapsed interiors make the scale of the loss easy to read.
