Few places in San Francisco look as bare as the valley between Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill does in this panorama, which records the ground after the April 1906 earthquake and fire. The earthquake struck early on April 18, and the fires that followed burned for roughly three days, consuming much of the city's central and northern districts. Numbered as the second in a series, the sequence lets viewers take in the breadth of the destruction across the valley in a way single frames could not. Panoramas like this one gave contemporary viewers a sense of how far the damage reached.
