A lone iron safe sits amid the wreckage, and its title says it belonged to a businessman who treated the surviving strongbox as a souvenir of his livelihood. The scene belongs to the aftermath of the April 1906 earthquake and fire, which devastated much of San Francisco over several days. Many merchants found that fireproof office safes had outlasted the buildings around them, so a safe standing in the rubble often stood for a shop or firm that had otherwise been lost. The picture captures the stubborn optimism that marked the city's early rebuilding.
