Mount Shasta rises alone above the northern California landscape, a snow-capped volcano in the Cascade Range that can be seen for many miles across the surrounding plains and forests. This view was made around 1899 by the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm that sold views of scenic and tourist destinations across the American West in the 1890s and early 1900s. The print is a cyanotype, a blue-toned process that was inexpensive and durable, which suited the company's wide circulation of landscape views to travelers and armchair readers. Its mountain subject reflects the period's appetite for images of the rail-accessible West.
