Yreka, a gold-rush town in far Northern California, is the subject here, seen from the high ground of Long Gulch Mountain above it. Yreka grew quickly after prospectors found gold in the surrounding creeks in the early 1850s, and by the time views like this were made it had become the seat of Siskiyou County and a busy supply point for the mining camps and the roads leading north into Oregon. A view taken from the surrounding ridge shows how the town was laid out in the valley, with its streets and buildings clustered against the hills that had drawn the miners there in the first place.
