A small graphite, ink, and crayon sketch dated 1859 shows a camp set high in the Sierra Nevada, with a covered wagon and cooking gear among the trees. By then the California gold rush had drawn overland travelers for about a decade, and many crossed mountain passes with wagons loaded for the long trip to the diggings. The discovery of the Comstock Lode in what is now Nevada, also in 1859, would soon send still more people over these routes. Images of everyday moments like cooking and rest, rather than mining itself, are less common than views of the gold fields.
