Few sketches from the 1860s record a single campsite as precisely as this one, which is labeled "Camp 120" in the Eagle Lake area of the Sierra Nevada. The drawing, made in graphite, ink, and crayon on a small sheet and signed "DAJ 1860," shows covered wagons and the rough encampment that travelers relied on during the long overland journeys to California. By 1860 the gold rush of the late 1840s and early 1850s had passed its peak, but emigrant traffic over the mountains and the mining camps it supported were still a visible part of California life. The Library of Congress holds the sheet in its Prints and Photographs Division.
