A dated sketch of a Kansas creek bank, the work is labeled "Cottonwood Creek, Sunday April 10th 1859," which pins it to a specific Sunday during a season of heavy overland travel. The Cottonwood, a tributary of the Arkansas River in east-central Kansas, lay along the routes that gold seekers used in 1858 and 1859 on their way west toward the Pike's Peak diggings in what is now Colorado. The catalog also links the sheet to the California gold rush, which had drawn emigrants across the plains since 1849, so the subject headings tie the scene to that wider migration. Drawn in graphite, ink, and crayon and signed "DAJ," it offers a close record of the open prairie and the creek timber that travelers passed through.
