A frightened horse fleeing a charging animal in the center of the frame gives this stereograph its title, and the subject headings name cowboys, bison, and a corral, which places the scene on a Montana range or stock yard. Butte was a booming mining city around 1909, when N.A. Forsyth published this card as one of a numbered series of Western scenes. Stereographs like this were viewed through a stereoscope, so the two nearly identical photographs fused into a single image with depth, making the chase seem to burst toward the viewer. The record does not say whether the scene was staged or caught by chance, which is worth keeping in mind when reading it.
